yellow:

  • (2) 7″ x 7″ squares
  • (2) 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ squares

white:

  • (2) 7″ x 7″ squares
  • (4) 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ squares

                                                                                                     Make 4

Step 1.  Place a yellow & a white 7″ square right sides together and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.  Using a straight stitch, sew a seam 1/4″ from the drawn line on both sides of the line.  Cut the squares apart along the line, press the seams open and trim each half-square triangle to 6 1/2″.  Make 4.

Step 2.  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on (4) white 3 1/2″ squares.  Place a square in the yellow corner of a half-square triangle from Step 1 and pin in place.  Sew along the line.  Trim the excess fabric from the corner 1/4″ from the sewn line.  Press the seam open.  Make (2).  Trimmed corner fabric is waste.

Unit A, 6 1/2″ unfinished; make 2

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the (2) yellow 3 1/2″ squares.  Place a white 3 1/2″ square in the yellow corner and a yellow 3 1/2″ square in the white corner of a half-square triangle from Step 1.  Sew along the line.  Trim the excess fabric from the corners 1/4″ from the sewn line.  Press the seams open.  Make 2.  Trimmed corner fabric is waste.

Unit B, 6 1/2″ unfinished; make 2

arrange the units in two rows.

With the seams pressed open and the units right-sides together, pin the fabrics where the     diagonals meet.  Use a 1/4″ seam to sew the units together.

Sew the B units together.  Sew the A units together.  Press the seams open.

Sew the rows together.  Press the seam open.
