6″ chevron quilt block tutorial – traditional cutting

6″ finished chevron block – tradition cutting & piecing

white

  • (2) 4″ x 4″ squares
  • (4) 2″ x 2″ squares

pink

  • (2) 4″ X 4″ squares
  • (2) 2″ x 2″ squares

Step 1. Place a pink & a white 4″ square right-sides together and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Using a straight stitch, sew a seam 1/4″ from the drawn line on both sides of the line. Cut the squares apart along the line, press the seams open and trim each half-square triangle to 3 1/2″. Make 4.

Step 2. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on (4) white 2″ squares. Place a square in the pink corner of a half-square triangle from Step 1 and pin in place. Sew along the line. Trim the excess fabric from the corner 1/4″ from the sewn line. Press the seam open. Make (2). The trimmed corner fabric is waste.

Unit A, 3 1/2″ unfinished; make 2

Step 3.  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the (2) pink 2″ squares. Place a white 2″ square in the pink corner and a pink 2″ square in the white corner of a half-square triangle from Step 1. Sew along the line. Trim the excess fabric from the corners 1/4″ from the sewn line. Press the seams open. Make 2. Trimmed corner fabric is waste.

Unit B, 3 1/2″ unfinished; make 2

Arrange the units in two rows.  Unit B in row 1, unit A in row 2

With the seams pressed open and the units right-sides together, pin the fabrics where the diagonals meet. Use a scant 1/4″ seam to sew the units together.  Press the seams open.

Sew the two rows together.  Press seam open.

  1. Thanks. I see what you mean to replace bear claw with chevron. I understand, now, the tutorial. At first, I could not see what the corner of the pink meant, until I stopped with the mental block and actually looked at the picture and saw this was the square from No 1, as you said. Ha Ha. Just a little brain fog. But it is clear. No need to change a thing. Thanks for all your effort.
