Pair the red and the white 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares right-sides together.  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.  Sew a straight seam a scant 1/4″ on both sides of the line.  Cut the squares apart on the line, press the seams open, and square to 2″ unfinished.    Yields 6 red & white HST.  You need 5, one is extra.

Place a 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ background square right-sides together with the red/white 2 1/2″ half-square-triangle.  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.  Sew a straight seam ON this line.  Using photo as a reference, trim away one corner.  Press seam open.  Square to 2″ unfinished.  These units are called half-quarter-square-triangles.
