 4″ x 6.5″ block or 6.5″ square label (finished sizes)

for petals:

(4) 2.5″ squares petal fabric

(8) 1.5″ squares background for petal points

Step 1.  On the wrong side of the 1.5″ background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.  Pin one square to each of the (4) 2.5″ petal squares in the upper right corner.  Stitch on the line.  Trim 1/4″ from the line (into the corner), and press the seam open.

Step 2.  Pin a second background square in the upper left corner.   Stitch on the line.  Trim 1/4″ from the line (into the corner), and press the seam open.

This is just like making flying geese units, but using a square instead of a rectangle for the geese body.

Make 4 petal-with-points units.  These units should measure 2.5″ unfinished.

Step 3.  Arrange the four units so the points are to the outside and rotated.  Stitch into two rows.  Press the seams away from the point.  Stitch the rows together.  Press the seam open.

narrow stem and leaves:

(2) 2.25″ x 2.5″ rectangles leaf fabric

(1) 1″ x 3″ stem fabric

(4) 1.25″ squares background for the leaf points

(2) 1″ x 2.25″ rectangles background for leaf spacers

Step 4.  On the wrong side of the (4) 1.25″ background squares, draw a diagonal line corner to corner.  Pin the background squares to the leaf rectangles as show in the photo above.   The leaf rectangles should have the 2.25″ edges top and bottom and the 2.5″ edges on the sides.  Stitch on the line.  Trim 1/4″ from the line (into the corner) and press the seams open.

Step 5.  Arrange the leaf / stem unit as show and stitch a background spacer to the bottom of the left leaf, and spacer to the top of the right leaf.  Press seams towards the background fabric.

Step 6.  Stitch the stem to the leaves.  Press seams towards the stem.

leaf / stem unit should measure 3″ x 4.5″ unfinished

label information:

(1) 3″ x 7″ rectangle background

Step 7.  Stitch the 3″ x 7″ background to either the left or right side of the flower block. Press the seam towards the background.

wide stem and leaves:

(2) 2″ x 2.5″ rectangles leaf fabric

(1) 1.5″ x 3″ stem fabric

(4) 1.25″ squares background fabric for the leaf points

Construction method for a wide stem is the same as the narrow stem and the units should measure 3″ x 4.5″ unfinished.

Sew the flower petal unit to the leaf / stem unit.  Press the seam open.  The flower block should measure 4.5″ x 7″ unfinished.

(1) 3″ x 7″ rectangle background

Stitch the 3″ x 7″ background to either the left or right side of the flower block.  Press the seam towards the background.
