6″ Witch’s Hat quilt label tutorial

A fun, witchy quilt label for your Halloween quilts.

6″ finished (edited 10-16-14)

What you need: black:

  • (1) 4 7/8″ square
  • (1) 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″

  • (1) 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″
  • (2) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″
  • (2) 2 3/4″ x 5 1/4″

  • 6 1/2″ square

embroidery thread, Sewline pencil with green lead, or Micron pen 005 in brown (005 tip makes a very narrow line)

1.  Fold the black square in half to make a rectangle.  Mark the center on one end.  Align a ruler from left corner to center mark and cut.  Repeat for right side. IMG_0699   2.  Cut the (2) background 2 3/4″ x 5 1/4″ rectangles in half on the diagonal, in opposite directions. IMG_0701

one like this, and one cut the opposite direction

3.  Align one background piece with the right side of the black triangle right sides together, making sure the tip of the background piece aligns with the black triangle tip (at the top).

Stitch 1/4″ seam allowance.  My seam is pressed to the side; press your seam OPEN. IMG_0707 4.  Align another background piece with the left side of the triangle, making sure to match the tips (at the top).  Stitch and press seam OPEN. IMG_0709 IMG_0711   Use a square ruler to check for size and trim the background dog ears.  The unit should measure 4 1/2″

OR you can use the From Marti Michell Perfect Patchwork Templates set D #22 & #23 to make the same triangle-in-a-square where you don’t have dog-ears and the pieces line up perfectly.

5.  Add the (2) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles to the sides.

6.  Add the 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ background to the top and the black to the bottom. IMG_0726 For the spider web embroidery:

from the top left corner measure to the right 1″, 2″, and 3″ and make small dots in the seam allowance; from top left corner measure down 1″, 3″, and 4″ and make small dots in the seam allowance;  from the top point of the hat, measure down the left side 3/4″, 1 1/2″, and 2 3/4″ and make very small dots along the seam.

Use a straight edge to connect the dots  (think spokes of a wheel). (edited 10-16-14 to add picture)

Along the outer edges of the block, stay a minimum of 1/2″ from the edge of the block for the scallops; you don’t want them ending up in the seam. Free hand draw 3 to 4 rounds of scallops. (edited 10-16-14 to add picture)

I used Finca perle cotton 12 color 8767 for the embroidery. Use the opposite side of the block for your label information.

Place right sides together with a piece of muslin and sew a 1/4″ all the way around.  Clip corners, make a 2″-3″ slit in the center of the muslin, and turn right side out.  Whip stitch to the back of your quilt.

This label will go on my Halloween Rotogravure (Sampler) quilt.  (edited 10-24-14)

Happy Quilting!
